Steven Mezyieski was raised in Wainscott, New York, where his family’s primary focus was farming. With such a background, it was only natural that he continued the family legacy. To this effect, Steven Mezynieski owns Driftwood Farms, which is a fully-functional farm located in Orient. A host of activities are carried out on the farm, but it’s most important output is the privet hedges that landscapers and private buyers from many parts of the country purchase for their needs.

Spread over 140 acres, more than seventy percent of Driftwood Farms is dedicated to growing privet hedges. The climate, temperature and soil conditions are perfect for growing the privets. The plants grow in field nursery rows, are wrapped with burlap and dug with the ground intact. The height of the plants ranges from two to six feet, enough to satisfy various customers’ needs.

Other than farming, Driftwood Farms also features two boarding barns, a riding trail and riding arena for clients who make use of the horse boarding services. The shelters are designed to meet the needs of the horses and riders, with services including frequent feeding, water and hay checks, multiple stall cleanings every day, and ample time in the property’s green paddocks.

Steven Mezynieski takes great pride in the work that goes at Driftwood. His family has worked tirelessly to ensure that the cultivation methods enable sustainable output, enough to take care of themselves and their clients. To him, farming is also the means by which the natural beauty of the land can be safeguarded.

Support Local Businesses

Buying from small business owners and local businesses instead of corporate giants is a simple way to show your support. If you own a business, work with other business owners to support each other instead of competing. This shows that you truly care about your community as a whole.

Participate in Local Tidy-Ups

When you see people alongside the road picking up litter, you’re witnessing something that you can help with. If you can find tidy-up events, sign up and work with your community to pick up the trash. If you can’t, grab a trash bag and a pair of gloves and go for trash collection walks on your own time.

Steven Mezynieski: What it Takes to Run a Farm

3/23/2017

Steven Mezynieski is the owner of Driftwood Farms. The estate is located in Orient, New York and is a full functioning farm. Mr. Mezynieski boards horses and sells privet plants wholesale. He is the owner of Southampton Excavation and Site Construction as well. Mr. Mezynieski operates a successful business as well as a thriving farm. Operating a farm requires hard work and dedication.

Farms generally have crops as well as animals. Some farms are small and can be operated by a single owner or a small staff. Other farms are large and require many farm hands. Larger farms may supply food to grocery chains and restaurants. On the other hand, smaller farms may only supply the local area. Farmers often keep early hours and spend their days maintaining their crops. Farms can produce nearly any type of crop. Some farms grow food while others may grow flowers and plants.

Successful farmers often take several factors into consideration. For example, farmers need to analyze their soil and determine what types of plants will thrive. Farmers may need to consider who they can sell their product to and how much they should grow. Operating a farm can be complex, but satisfying. Steven Mezynieski owns a farm in New York and grows privet hedges.
